Students do adapt to a certain teaching stye from having it every day but I feel that students can adapt to different teaching styles. From m high school experience I was able to grasp a range of different teaching styles that ranged just reading the textbook and doing exercises or watching a powerpoint to learn. I think that if students struggle with the new teaching style they will be able to grasp it by the end of the year and semester. It is important that teachers realize that some students may struggle and of the students continue to struggle then the teacher should change his or her teaching style.
I do believe that the method that the teacher used to teach has a direct connection with the students motivation and grades because if the teacher shows that they are interested in the subject then the students are more likely to benefit. I know this to be true because by the time that I was in Spanish 4 in high school the teacher was able to express her opinions on the class. This showed me that the teacher had a unique style that motivated her students. The teacher needs to have a good teaching style because it shows their motivation and when the teacher is more motivated that class grades and overall atmosphere is positive.
You say that it can be beneficial to the student to be shown a variety of teaching styles and methods, and that if they struggle, they will eventually catch on, but is it worth it? Should they spend half of the semester, or more, struggling through the material and getting the grades that go along with it when another teacher could clear up the issue quickly and efficiently. Not all teachers are able or willing to change their teaching methods to fit the students either. I agree they all should, but it doesn't always happen, unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteStudents do need to get used to different teaching methods and that is a big benefit of having a variety of teachers growing up. I think language teachers should try to do a review unit at the beginning and it might not be a bad idea for students to have a review quiz before the review unit so all the students know what material they should focus on the most while the class does the review unit. Even students that had the same teacher could still have very different levels of understanding, due to unique learning styles and personal experiences. Having a teacher who is more motivated will help students be more motivated as well and work harder to "catch up" to where they should be or what they need to review from the year before.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is beneficial to have different teaching styles. Although it is hard to have students who don't understand due to the teaching style, students still are expected to perform well. It's a good life lesson in a way to have students find other ways to learn the material if the teacher cannot help. I think most teachers would be willing to adapt their style or offer extra help if the lesson style is the hinderance to the student.
